Pet Friendly Housing
Depending on how many pets you have and your pet’s size or breed, it might take a little extra work to find new housing when you move — but it can be done! Searching online for pet-friendly housing will give you lots of options. If you’re moving and know that you will not be going to pet-friendly housing (ie. living with allergic family/friends, deployment, assisted living) and will have to give up your animal, please realize that most shelters have a waiting list for animals to come in. Help us help you by giving us time to find a foster home or a spot in our Adoption Center.

Additional Resources
When it comes to a change of location, there are a couple ways to help lessen the amount of stress put on both human and pets:
- Give yourself plenty of time to find housing that is pet-friendly. The search for new housing can take weeks, and with some places a meet-and-greet is required prior to signing a lease. The more time spent to find the right place makes for a smooth and simple move.
- Be honest: the amount of pets you have; what size, weight, and breed they are; what hardware and supplies they have; and the temperament of the pets. Sneaking pets into no-pet housing can be detrimental to the pets, as well as the reputation of other pet owners, and it is strongly ill-advised to do it.
- Get animal referrals, if you can, from your veterinarian, previous landlords and roommates. This will give the potential landlord an idea of what to expect from an objective point of view.
- Offer to have a meet-and-greet with the owner/property manager prior to signing a lease if they do not ask for one first. This will give them a peek into your pet’s behavior and temperament.
- Crate train your dogs if possible so that the landlord will be comfortable knowing the dog will be safe and secure while you are not home.
- If the landlord does not already plan to do so, develop a pet agreement with them that details the terms of having the pet and get both the pet approval and agreement in writing
OPTION 1: RENTAL COMMUNITIES
The list of rental properties following the tips in this document include a variety of properties that are pet friendly with restrictions. While all allow pets, most have restrictions in terms of: number of pets, weight of pets, restricted breeds, and acceptance of exotics. Since many of these listings are apartment complexes or communities, they are geared towards owners with a max of 3 animals, usually cats or dogs, that are smaller and non-aggressive.
OPTION 2: NO BREED/WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS
Cory Layton, property manager at Iron Creek Properties, can help you find a rental home with no breed or weight restrictions. All cats and dogs must be spayed and neutered and up to date on vaccines.
You can read about his guidelines on pets and pet-friendly rentals later in this document. You can call Cory at (828) 712–9856.
OPTION 3: CRAIG’S LIST
Search Craig’s List housing for independent landlord listings. The Asheville listings that are cat and dog friendly are found here. Similar to the rental communities, private owners are usually pet friendly with restrictions like breed, weight, and number of pets. Some owners are more flexible than others and pet restrictions will be negotiated on an individual basis. There is usually a non-refundable pet deposit.
The HSUS lists Pets are Welcome properties in each state. This is a good resource for if you are moving to a new state, county, etc.; however, there are no listings for Buncombe County
OPTION 4: PRIVATE LANDLORD
Private landlords will care most about your credit and rental history. Discussing credit and rental history at the first introduction will show responsibility as a tenant. If possible, get references from previous landlords as well as the pets vaccination and spay/neuter records and the veterinarian’s recommendation. Not only will these documents show your character and responsibility as a pet owner but they will also provide the potential landlord a summary of what to expect from you and your pets behaviors. If prior rental history cannot be provided or if credit is less than perfect, offer an additional pet deposit or negotiate with the landlord.
When it comes to renting from a private landlord, it is crucial to be honest about the number of pets, size and weight of pets, breed and/or type of pet, if you have exotic pets or fish tanks, and the equipment that comes with the pet. Pets should be spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated before searching for a rental. This ensures that they are less likely to bite, spray (urinating to mark territory), and stray from the property – all of which are costly consequences for the landlord.
Other important things to bring up with a potential landlord include: your employment history, noise level and cleanliness of yourself/pets, obedience training, crate-ability of dogs, in/outdoor cats.
It is a good idea to offer to pay a more upfront pet deposit or to take care of the deep clean of the property before vacating, including paying to have the carpets cleaned. Make sure to include these terms in the lease agreement/contract. This may help ease their mind in terms of leasing to a pet owner.
