It began with two cats darting between porches in a quiet West Asheville neighborhood. Then one day, there were kittens everywhere! Peeking from under decks, mewing from bushes, scampering across driveways. In what felt like no time at all, two cats had turned into eighteen!

Luckily, 18 won’t turn into more, thanks to caring neighbors who decided to help.

They talked with one another, shared what they’d seen, and came up with a plan to help the cats who also call their street home. Together, they teamed up with our friends at ASPCA’s Spay-Neuter Alliance to humanely trap and spay/neuter the cats. A few of the kittens found homes right in their neighborhood, and the rest will soon be adopted into warm, loving homes through Brother Wolf so they don’t have to face the cold nights outside. The adult cats were returned to their familiar outdoor home that they enjoy, with a plan for food, water, and warm shelter.
This is what compassion can look like in action. The beautiful power of community; looking out for one another, human and animal alike.

If you’re seeing outdoor cats in your neighborhood, you can make a difference too.

Start by talking with your neighbors. Is the cat socialized to humans or do they prefer no human contact? Do they already have a home or an ear tip? Learn more ways to help community cats with this robust resource guide from Alley Cat Allies.

This Halloween, the only thing multiplying faster than kittens is kindness!
