Elgee’s Amazing Mountaintop Rescue

Boy, do I have a story that will be sure to warm your heart!

About a week ago, our staff and volunteers began hearing reports of a domestic cat being spotted in an unlikely locale — on the top of Looking Glass Rock in Brevard, NC! It wasn’t clear how he had ended up in such a remote location, but we knew he was in danger with little access to food and a white coat that made it nearly impossible for him to hide from predators.

Something I have always admired about our team is that there’s not much that can stand in the way between us and an animal in need — including an incredibly steep hike up a mountain.

So at 6:30am on Saturday, our Field Operations Manager, Eric, set out with two of our most dedicated cat-loving volunteers, Bill and Mary Ann. With a humane trap strapped to a frame on Bill’s back, the trio climbed for 3 hours before reaching the peak of Looking Glass Rock.

Less than 5 minutes after baiting the humane trap with wet food, the very hungry cat (who we later named Elgee) was caught and on his way back down the mountain and into Brother Wolf’s care for medical intake and assessment. The poor guy is underweight and scared, but that will be remedied in no time.

In fact, Bill and Mary Ann were so moved by his rescue, that they will be adopting him into their own family, where he will have two other cat siblings and will never have to fend for himself again!

We hope you’ll enjoy this video we made of Elgee’s epic rescue. One by one, we’ll keep making a huge difference for animals like him.

Bill and Mary Ann are true saviors for cats. In addition to climbing a mountain to rescue Elgee, they are financial supporters of the cat area we’re building at our Sanctuary in Leicester, NC. Things are progressing at the Sanctuary every day. Recently, testing was done to ensure the soils at the building locations are able to handle the weight of the structures. Everything looks great, and we’re one step closer to building this incredible resource for the animals. If you still haven’t visited the Sanctuary and would like a ‘behind the scenes” tour, email denise@bwar.org today to schedule one. I’d love for you to meet our animals and see our vision as it comes to life!

For the animals,
