Athena
I thought I'd write and tell you about how Mama Dog, who is now called Athena, is doing. She is doing great!
She's at the doggie spa today for her first grooming. I felt nervous leaving her, but I hope she will be fine. She loves all people, but is not too fond of other dogs. I have talked to a trainer there at Brother Wolf, and she advised me on how to get Athena past the grumpy stage when other dogs pass by!
Athena sleeps on the bed with me at night for about an hour, then moves to the floor in the doorway of my bedroom, facing out. Very much like she's guarding me. Later on, she slips back into the living room to the couch, which she appropriated right away! Very funny. I put a big beach towel over it, and that's her overnight spot. She is a spoiled dog, though. She has four other dog beds! And, she loves sleeping on the treadmill track! It's in the sunroom with lots of windows and she can see out while she's lying down. I had a handyman come and build a gate on my big front deck, so now she can be out there and look around. There's a pond and lots of birds, rabbits and squirrels to mesmerize her. We go on walks around the little community where I live, three-five times a day. She loves everyone she meets. She sits and shakes *both* paws now for treats. She has also lost a little weight; she had gotten a little chubby from her confinement.
The big news is that she's going on a road trip with me to New Mexico next week! Lots of driving. She is always excited to get into the car, and I bought a harness that hooks into the seatbelt, so she'll be safe. I'm really looking forward to this: a dream come true, a road trip with my dog. "On the Road with Athena." Sounds great, don't you think?
I will attach some pictures. She looks beautiful and I think she's happy. She didn't make much eye contact at all the first few weeks, but now we seem very bonded with each other. I dearly love her and am a little teary, actually, while she's away today at the groomer's. I work at home, and so she's almost always with me; and she always stays close. I miss her!
Thanks for all you do. Brother Wolf is the best shelter I've ever seen, and you all do a fabulous job. I tell everyone that I found Athena there, and what a compassionate place it is.
